Discover a wellspring of history in this tiny Texas town.
IN THE EARLY 20th century, tourists poured into the town of Mineral Wells, Texas, for its natural springs. The water contained lithium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, all said to promote healing. Bathhouses were built for restorative soaks, and drinking pavilions were abundant. By 1920, the town was being touted as “the South’s greatest health resort.” Luxury accommodations flourished, including the Baker Hotel & Spa, which opened in 1929 and became a draw for Hollywood icons like Judy Garland and Clark Gable. Though the last half-century saw a downturn in visitors, rebirth is on its way—historic properties have recently been given new life, and in 2023, Mineral Wells was designated the wellness capital of Texas.
