2025 learnings for buying heavy equipment in India
B2B Purchase
|December 2025
Contractors in 2025 prioritise total cost of ownership over sticker price, shifting from global catalogues to locally built, digitally enabled, eco-compatible machines as Gati Shakti accelerates utilisation. Procurement now centres on uptime, lifecycle value, local supply-chain reliability, and strong after-sales ecosystems. With rising demand cycles, smart equipment, rentals, financing, and quality pre-owned options, flexible procurement strategies are essential.

The end of 2025 marks a watershed for capital investment in India's construction and mining industries. Heavy equipment demand has reached historic highs, driven by the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) and projects such as PM Gati Shakti, which aim to invest over ₹111 lakh crore by 2025. However, the challenge confronting procurement professionals today is not just, "How much does it cost?" but rather, "How resilient, connected, and localised is this investment?"
The conventional procurement matrix, based on initial capital expenditure (CAPEX), has become outdated. In its stead, a sophisticated Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) model has arisen, with a heavy emphasis on three crucial, sometimes neglected, factors: operational uptime, supply chain resilience, and regulatory compliance with green regulations. Industry leaders are now investing not just in iron and steel, but also in integrated solutions to protect their businesses from market volatility, environmental scrutiny, and changing domestic legislation.
The mandate for domestic resilience
A significant strategic change is taking place, shifting procurement choices away from global catalogues and towards highly localised production capacity. This change, in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat project, is aimed at ensuring long-term support and reducing supply chain risk. The guarantee of replacement parts and quick service deployment currently surpasses marginal cost differences from imports for large contractors and mining companies.
