TESLA EXPANDS ROBOTAXI SERVICE INTO TEXAS CITIES
AppleMagazine
|May 08, 2026
Tesla is moving forward with its robotaxi strategy, extending its autonomous ride-hailing service into Dallas and Houston as part of a broader push to scale self-driving transportation.
-
The rollout marks a new phase in the company’s effort to turn its Full Self-Driving technology into a commercial mobility platform.
The expansion follows earlier testing and limited deployment in Austin, where Tesla began introducing driverless ride services under controlled conditions. By entering two additional major Texas cities, the company is signaling confidence in its system's readiness while also exposing it to more complex urban environments.
EARLY DEPLOYMENT SHOWS LIMITED AVAILABILITY
Initial data from rollout tracking indicates that availability in Dallas and Houston remains extremely limited. Reports suggest only one vehicle operating in each market during the first 24 hours, with service coverage ranging between zero and two percent of potential ride requests.
This level of deployment reflects a cautious approach. Rather than launching at full scale, Tesla appears to be testing system performance, mapping accuracy, and operational stability before increasing the number of vehicles.
Limited availability also helps manage risk. Autonomous driving systems must operate reliably across a wide range of conditions, including traffic patterns, road layouts, and unpredictable human behavior. Expanding gradually allows Tesla to collect data and refine performance in real-world scenarios.
HOW THE SERVICE WORKS
Users can request rides through the Tesla app, similar to traditional ride-hailing platforms. Service zones currently cover central areas of each city, including neighborhoods like Highland Park in Dallas and Jersey Village in Houston.
