ROOMBA FOUNDER RETURNS WITH AI PET ROBOT

Colin Angle is making another attempt to bring robotics into everyday homes, this time with an AI-powered companion designed to behave more like a pet than a machine.

ROOMBA FOUNDER RETURNS WITH AI PET ROBOT

Unveiled at Future of Everything conference, the prototype—called Familiar—uses generative AI to respond to speech, learn behavior over time, and interact with users in a way that feels more organic than previous consumer robots.

The concept marks a shift from functional robotics, like vacuum cleaners, toward emotional and social interaction. Angle spent more than two decades building iRobot into a household name with Roomba. Now, the goal is different: not cleaning floors, but creating a robot people might bond with.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HOME ROBOT

Familiar is roughly the size of a small dog and is designed to act like one in certain ways, but without replicating a real animal exactly. Instead of speaking in full sentences, the robot uses sounds and movements to communicate. It reacts to voice input, adapts to routines, and develops behavior patterns over time through AI learning.

imageAngle has emphasized that the robot is not meant to replace human interaction or act as a security device. The focus is companionship. That distinction matters because many past home robots tried to do too many things at once, combining surveillance, automation, and interaction in ways that often felt intrusive or confusing.

By narrowing the purpose, the Familiar aims to deliver a clearer experience. It is not trying to be a smart home hub or a productivity assistant. It is meant to be present, responsive, and engaging in a way that fits into daily life without requiring constant input.

WHY THE PET MODEL MATTERS

The idea of a robotic pet is not new. Sony Aibo explored similar territory decades ago, offering a mechanical companion that could move, react, and simulate personality. But earlier attempts were limited by hardware constraints and simpler programming.
