QUALCOMM, CXMT AND THE RAM SQUEEZE

The biggest constraint in the 2026 smartphone market may no longer be the processor.

QUALCOMM, CXMT AND THE RAM SQUEEZE

It may be memory. Qualcomm is reportedly exploring a partnership with Changxin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, to develop custom DRAM for smartphones, a move that reflects how sharply the mobile supply chain is being reshaped by the artificial intelligence boom. The reported collaboration comes as memory makers shift capacity toward higher-margin AI and server products, leaving handset vendors exposed to rising costs, tighter supply, and difficult design trade-offs.

imageThe idea behind the alliance is straightforward: if the global memory market is being pulled toward data centers, smartphone platforms need a more tailored answer. Qualcomm, which already sits at the center of the Android flagship ecosystem through its Snapdragon chips, appears to be looking beyond application processors and into memory strategy itself. CXMT, meanwhile, gives Qualcomm a potential manufacturing partner at a time when established DRAM suppliers are prioritizing AI-related demand.

WHY RAM HAS BECOME THE NEW PRESSURE POINT

For years, smartphone launches were framed around processor speed, camera upgrades, and battery life. In 2026, memory availability is becoming just as important. The reason is not a sudden collapse in phone demand, but a structural shift in the semiconductor market driven by AI infrastructure.

imageReuters reported earlier this year that Samsung and SK Hynix were warning customers about tighter supply for conventional DRAM used in phones and PCs because the industry's focus had moved toward more profitable AI-related memory products. Apple also flagged rising memory costs, saying the pressure was beginning to affect profitability as suppliers diverted more attention to AI demand.
