MUSK UNVEILS $55B TERAFAB AI CHIP FACTORY PLAN
AppleMagazine
|May 08, 2026
Elon Musk has outlined an ambitious plan to build a massive semiconductor facility in Texas, aiming to secure in-house chip production for both Tesla and SpaceX.
-
The proposed project, known as Terafab, is expected to begin with an investment of around $55 billion and could scale to as much as $119 billion if all development phases are completed.
The facility would focus on producing advanced chips for Tesla’s autonomous driving systems and Optimus humanoid robots, marking a major shift toward vertical integration in Musk’s broader technology ecosystem.
A MOVE TOWARD CHIP INDEPENDENCE
The Terafab project is designed to reduce reliance on external semiconductor suppliers such as Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. These companies currently play a central role in producing the specialized chips used in high-performance computing, including those required for AI and autonomous systems.
By building its own manufacturing capacity, Musk aims to control a critical part of the supply chain. This approach mirrors strategies adopted by other technology firms that are seeking greater independence in an environment where chip demand continues to outpace supply.
For Tesla, this means more direct control over the hardware powering its Full Self-Driving systems. For SpaceX, it aligns with broader ambitions in AI infrastructure, where computing performance is a key competitive factor.
SCALE AND LOCATION OF THE PROJECT
The proposed Terafab facility would be located near the Gibbons Creek Reservoir in Grimes County, Texas. The site is still subject to local approval, with a vote scheduled for June 3 by county commissioners on a property tax abatement agreement.
If approved, the project would represent one of the largest semiconductor investments in the United States. Initial estimates place the cost at $55 billion, with potential expansion bringing total investment to $119 billion.
