Meta Platforms is pushing deeper into robotics with a strategy that focuses less on building humanoid machines and more on powering them.

META TARGETS THE AI OS LAYER FOR HUMANOID ROBOTS

The company has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a young firm specializing in full-body robot control and sensor integration, as it builds what could become the foundational intelligence layer for humanoid systems. The deal brings key talent into Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, including co-founder Lerrel Pinto and researcher Xiaolong Wang, both known for work in robotic perception and control. The move signals a clear direction: Meta is not positioning itself as a hardware manufacturer, but as the platform provider that enables robots to see, move, and interact with the world.

AN OPERATING SYSTEM APPROACH TO ROBOTICS

Meta's strategy resembles how mobile ecosystems evolved. Instead of building every device, companies created operating systems that other manufacturers could adopt. In this model, the OS becomes the central layer that defines how hardware functions and how applications are built.

For humanoid robots, that layer is still emerging. Machines require coordination between vision, motion, balance, and interaction. Each of these components involves complex AI models that must work together in real time.

By focusing on the intelligence layer, Meta is aiming to provide that coordination system. Rather than producing robots itself, the company could supply the software stack that manufacturers integrate into their machines, effectively becoming the platform on which humanoid robotics runs.

Assured Robot Intelligence brings capabilities that are essential for this approach. Its work centers on full-body control models, which allow robots to manage complex movements across multiple joints and sensors. This includes tasks like walking, grasping objects, and maintaining balance.
