APPLE CUTS MAC RAM OPTIONS AMID MEMORY SHORTAGE
AppleMagazine
|May 08, 2026
Apple is tightening availability across its desktop lineup as the global memory shortage deepens, removing several higher-RAM configurations of the Mac mini and Mac Studio from its online store.
-
Models that previously offered 32GB and 64GB options on the Mac mini are no longer listed, while the high-end M3 Ultra Mac Studio has lost its 256GB configuration, leaving only lower memory tiers available.
The changes come as delivery timelines stretch. Current Mac Studio orders are showing estimated shipping windows of nine to ten weeks, signaling ongoing supply constraints affecting both production and configuration flexibility.
HIGHER-END CONFIGURATIONS DISAPPEAR
The most noticeable impact is on premium configurations. The Mac mini, which had gradually expanded into higher-performance territory, has now been scaled back to lower memory options, reducing its appeal for users who rely on heavier multitasking or professional workloads.
On the Mac Studio side, the adjustment is more significant. The M3 Ultra variant was positioned as a workstation-class desktop, capable of supporting large creative, engineering, and AI-related tasks. Removing the 256GB RAM option narrows its role, particularly for users working with large datasets, high-resolution video production, or memory-intensive applications.
The remaining 96GB configuration still offers substantial capacity, but it marks a step down from what Apple had previously made available. The shift suggests that high-density memory modules are among the most constrained components in the current supply environment.
MEMORY SHORTAGE IS DRIVING THE DECISIONSThe cuts are tied to broader industry pressures rather than a product strategy change. Memory supply has been tightening globally as demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to surge. Data centers and AI servers are consuming large volumes of high-performance memory, including advanced DRAM and high-bandwidth memory.
