Amazon is accelerating its logistics strategy with the launch of Amazon Now, a service designed to deliver thousands of everyday items in about 30 minutes.

The rollout begins across dozens of U.S. cities, including Seattle, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and the Dallas–Fort Worth area, as the company intensifies competition in the fast-growing on-demand retail space.
The move reflects a broader shift in consumer expectations, where speed is becoming as important as price and selection. By targeting ultra-fast delivery, Amazon is aiming to redefine what “instant” shopping looks like at scale.
HOW AMAZON NOW WORKS
Amazon Now is built around a network of small, strategically placed fulfillment sites known as micro-fulfillment centers, often referred to as “dark stores.” These facilities typically range between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet and are located closer to residential areas than traditional warehouses.
By positioning inventory near customers, Amazon reduces the distance items need to travel, enabling faster delivery times. These locations stock a curated selection of products, focusing on items that are frequently ordered and suitable for rapid dispatch.Customers can place orders through the Amazon app, selecting from thousands of products that are available for near-immediate delivery. The system is designed to streamline picking, packing, and dispatching processes, minimizing delays at every stage.
PRICING STRUCTURE AND ACCESS
The service introduces a tiered pricing model. Prime members pay $3.99 per order, while nonmembers are charged $13.99. Orders below $15 incur an additional $1.99 fee, encouraging larger purchases.
This pricing strategy reflects a balance between accessibility and cost recovery. Ultra-fast delivery requires significant investment in infrastructure, labor, and logistics, and the fees help offset those expenses.
