VETERAN caretaker chief Lennie Lawrence says he is “excited” to be handed the reins at Hartlepool United permanently – just a few weeks before his 77th birthday!
The wily boss has managed over 1,000 professional matches for the likes of Charlton Athletic, Middlesbrough and Luton Town but has not held a manager’s position since being sacked by Cardiff City in 2005.
He stepped up from assistant manager on a caretaker basis at the National League side last month after Darren Sarll was sacked following the FA Cup fourth qualifying round defeat by Brackley Town.
Lawrence whose first managerial appointment came at Charlton 42 years ago, steered Pools to a win and two draws from his three games in temporary charge as they retained their mid-table position.
