LAMINE YAMAL

IN THE buildup to the 2025 Champions League final, six Inter Milan players were asked to name their toughest opponent of the season. All six, spread across the pitch from goalkeeper to striker, chose the same teenage luminary: Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona's 18-year-old scamp has established himself as one of the world's most feared footballers with a unique blend of youthful exuberance and innate maturity. Beyond the audacious flicks, dizzying dribbles and signature swats at goal, it is Yamal's staggering ability to choose the right weapon with which to torment his opponents that stands out most.

“Lamine's decision-making is almost always correct, which is surprising for someone so young,” Yamal's first senior manager Xavi Hernández said shortly after the player became the youngest in Barcelona's history at the age of 15.

By that point, Yamal had already been a member of Barcelona's various youth teams for more than half his short life, joining the Catalan giants based along the coast from his treasured neighborhood of Rocafonda in Mataró when he was just 7.

Most of the record-toppling number of goals that he scores are celebrated with a special jangle of fingers spelling out the number 304. The proud native of an increasingly scrutinized slice of Mataró came up with this nod to the area's postcode while sitting in his cousin's car at the start of 2022.
