PLAYING FROM A RED PENALTY AREA

One of the options you have if your ball comes to rest in a red penalty area is to play it as it lies.

If the lie isn't too bad or the circumstances allow it, you can have a whack and hopefully get it safely back out.

But what happens if you don't get it out? What if you hit the ball and it remains in the same penalty area or goes into another penalty area? Such a scenario is covered by Rule 17.2a.

For a start, you could play it again as it lies. Or, you could choose to admit defeat and, adding one penalty stroke, you could take relief. There are four relief options available to you in a red penalty area.
