The Fifth Force: Could It Unlock the Secret of Dark Matter?
Scientific India
|September - October 2025
What if the universe is powered by a force we've never seen before? For centuries, science has explained nature with four fundamental forces.
But now, whispers of a mysterious fifth force are emerging and it could finally solve the riddle of dark matter, the invisible glue of the cosmos.
The Invisible Majority
Look up at the night sky, and you'll see countless stars, planets, and galaxies. Yet all of that shining stuff is just a small fraction of reality. Roughly 27% of the universe is made of dark matter an unseen substance that holds galaxies together. Without it, stars would fly apart into space. But despite decades of searching, scientists have never directly found it.
Scientists are using “trapped ions” in highly precise experiments to search for a new, fifth force of nature that could help explain elusive dark matter. The invisible dark matter is one of the universe's biggest mysteries, and its existence is confirmed only by the gravitational effects it produces.
According to the current Standard Model, four fundamental forces underpin all known physics: electromagnetism, gravity, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. However, since the mid-1980s, physicists have wondered if a fifth fundamental force could exist, which would help to explain some observational anomalies. And since then, many studies have boldly claimed discovery of this elusive force.
