Sue Wilkinson on the case of ITV crime drama

Who killed Sarah Polly? Could it be as simple as her husband?

Eve Myles as detective Eve Polli Eve Myles as detective Eve Polli

Put simply the new ITV series Gone is a crime drama in which a headmaster becomes the prime suspect after the disappearance of his wife.

Heavy sigh and assumptions it would be another gory, gloomy affair in which the detective is as flawed as the suspects and it is obvious whodunnit from the casting credits.

That could not be further from the truth than the notion Jack the Ripper was innocent. It is a far superior, complex, competlling, tense, cat-and-mouse chase.

At the head of a cracking cast is David Morrissey as the tightly-wound countrol freak Michael Polly, the head of a posh, private boys' school near Bristol.

Eve Myles is Detective Annie Cassidy, who is tasked with solving the disappearance of his wife Sarah.
