HP Governor approves bill extending Shimla Mayor's tenure

Ending months of political and legal uncertainty, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has given assent to the amendment Bill extending the tenure of the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor and Deputy Mayor from two anda half years to five years.
The Bill, passed by the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, amends the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation ‘Actand brings the tenure of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Shimla in line with other municipal corporations in the state, With the Governor's approval, the amendment has now formally became law.
Speaking to media persons at Raj Bhavan, Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan said that he met Governor Shukla and expressed gratitude for granting assent to the legislation, Chauhan said the state government had introduced the amendment to ensure uniformity in the tenure of mayors across municipal corporations
