THE news that Dow Corning is considering shutting down production of what it calls 'basic siloxanes' at its plant in Barry is a hugely significant moment for the people affected, the town of Barry and the Welsh economy as a whole.

The silicones works on the banks of the Severn Estuary in Barry has quietly been one of the most significant manufacturing operations in Wales for decades and provided significant employment in Wales' biggest town.
It is one of just three plants around the world owned by the giant Dow chemical company that produces the building blocks of silicone. It exports around Europe.
Chances are that most people in Europe have some Barry-made silicone sealing their bathrooms, kitchens or windows.
The basic silicoxane production line in Barry is only one part of the plant.
