New homes on speedway track could face refusal

Abbey Stadium in Swindon, which hosted greyhound and speedway races

(Dan Adams)

Swindon has been recommended for refusal by Swindon councillors.Members of Swindon Borough Council's planning committee will meet next week to discuss and decide on Gaming International's two linked applications for planning permission at the former greyhound and speedway stadium.

One is to knock down some of the stadium buildings and to build 130 houses and flats largely on the site of the racetrack and infield.

The second application is for permission to use some of the more recently built elements, constructed as part of the now-aborted rebuilding of the stadium as community facilities in a hub on the north of the site, including sports facilities and a community centre.
