Correct strategy emphasised for electricity supply
Vietnam Investment Review
|April 20, 2026
Vietnam is intensifying efforts to remove obstructions in its revised power plan as policymakers seek to secure electricity supply for ambitious economic growth targets.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) on April 15 convened a nationwide hybrid meeting to review the implementation of power generation and transmission projects, reflecting growing urgency as electricity demand is projected to surge.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long underlined the strategic importance of ensuring adequate power supply, noting that energy security has become a central pillar of Vietnam's economic agenda. He said the revised Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) plays a critical role not only in meeting rising consumption needs but also in supporting the country's commitments to green transition and emissions reduction.
"Ensuring sufficient electricity for production, business, and daily life is a particularly important task that has received close attention," Long said. "The PDP8 carries special significance in guaranteeing national energy security, meeting socioeconomic development needs, and implementing commitments on energy transition and emissions reduction. We consider the effective implementation of approved power generation and grid projects a critical mission to ensure electricity supply and achieve the growth targets that have been set."
The revised PDP8, approved in April 2025, targets total installed capacity of 183-236GW by 2030, implying annual additions of up to 25.6GW. This scale of expansion presents a formidable challenge, requiring coordinated action across ministries, local authorities, and state-owned enterprises.
