Leafs leadership says pattern of playoff failure is cause for franchise to reconsider its approach
Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll is the team's future, GM Brad Treliving said during a season-ending media session Friday.
As MLSE CEO Keith Pelley, Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan and GM Brad Treliving took their places behind the microphones at their season-ending media session, they did their best to convey strength, unity and hope.
Pelley professed that winning is all that matters.
"Skill, chemistry, and unity is what I believe the recipe for success is. And, for me, success is winning the Stanley Cup," Pelley said. "Nothing else matters other than winning the Stanley Cup."
The path toward that goal remained somewhat undefined, given the answers to the questions that followed.
Shanahan and Treliving each took responsibility for post-season failure. They thanked Sheldon Keefe for nine years in the organization. They were light on roster-changing specifics but heavy with slogans. They talked about being less patient with a core group that is getting older. They talked about now being the time for change.
They didn't talk at all about the process, a favourite term under former GM Kyle Dubas. They talked more about changing the pattern of post-season losing.
