Punjab Congress teeters on the edge of collapse
The Sunday Guardian
|July 05, 2026
A seven-day ultimatum by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s camp to the Congress high command, an explosive allegation by Balkaur Singh, father of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, against Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari’s cryptic public message after being left out of the party’s organisational structure have together intensified speculation that the Punjab Congress is heading towards a major split ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Channi faction has asked the Congress high command to reconsider its decision to retain Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress president within seven days, warning that if the leadership fails to do so, they will “find their own way”. Political observers see the warning as an attempt to arm-twist the party leadership and mount pressure on the high command to either replace Raja Warring or accommodate Channi’s camp on its terms. Party insiders believe that if the high command refuses to bend, Channi could lead a separate faction or launch a new political outfit before the Assembly elections.
The strongest attack came from Balkaur Singh during Channi’s gathering at Morinda. Addressing party leaders, Balkaur Singh alleged that “had Raja Warring not forced us to cremate Sidhu Moosewala, we might have got justice by now”. He further claimed that Warring insisted on the cremation after receiving a call from someone in the government.
