|April 15, 2025
Behind the creation of the modern Bangla calendar, it was actually an Iranian scholar who was a minister of court in the imperial cabinet of Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar—the third Mughal emperor.
Akbar's cabinet had nine ministers, and of them Abul Fazal was the grand minister and Raja Todar Mall was the finance minister and Mahesh Das alias Birbal was Akbar's advisor.
Akbar's ministry was facing difficulties in collecting revenue as the Mughals were maintaining the Hijri fiscal year based on lunar months for the purpose that often didn't coincide and correspond to crop cycles in India. As a result, it used to create inconvenience for the revenue department in maintaining the accounts relating to revenue collection.
