High-stakes Islamabad talks open as US, Iran seek lasting truce
The Statesman Delhi
|April 12, 2026
Direct, face-to-face negotiations between the US and Iran opened in Islamabad on Saturday, marking a historic moment in US-Iran relations, with the last highest level meeting taking place back in 1979.
A White House official confirmed that "the US, Pakistan and Iran are holding trilateral face-to-face meetings today in Islamabad," bringing together senior leadership from all sides in what is considered the most consequential engagement between Washington and Tehran in decades.
However, despite the meeting's historic nature, both sides are negotiating under intense pressure, fully aware that any failure in reaching a deal could collapse the ceasefire and push the region back into open conflict. Divisions continue to remain on core issues, ranging from nuclear programme, economic sanctions, to control over the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran's ballistic missile and drone programme.
