Ashes: Root’s 41st Test ton puts him alongside Ponting in elite list
The Statesman Delhi
|January 06, 2026
Joe Root once again stamped his authority on the Ashes, producing a sublime century on day two of the Sydney Test to move level with Ricky Ponting in third place on the all-time list of men’s Test hundreds.
The England batter brought up his 41st Test ton, achieving the landmark in his 163rd match, five fewer than Ponting, who reached the mark across 168 Tests between 1995 and 2012.
The hundred was Root’s second of the ongoing Ashes tour and the first international century of the 2026 calendar year. It also marked a significant shift in his relationship with Australian conditions.
Before this series, Root had endured a remarkable drought, failing to score a single international hundred in 14 Tests on Australian soil. That sequence ended earlier in the tour with an unbeaten 138 in the Brisbane day-night Test, and his effort in Sydney became his maiden red-ball century at the SCG.
