You are fired
The Statesman Bhubaneswar
|April 14, 2025
I have worked forty years in business, diplomacy, consulting and international development and have never heard a more vulgar decree than "You are fired!"
I was lucky not to be dismissed. I was luckier to be working with decent people who would not use an uncouth expression like that.
Not all employees are honest or effective or the right fit. They may have to be let go. But there are ways of letting them go humanely than spitting that they are fired. It is loutish if the employee is not the right person for the job because his choice then is the company's fault rather than his. If the employee is ineffective, there can be a hundred reasons, only a few of which would be personal rather than organizational. Even if the employee is dishonest, there are more civil ways of telling the person that there would no longer be a place in the organization.

India’s water needs
No water strategy can succeed if it remains confined to government files. Water is too local, too seasonal and too personal for that. It must become a people’s movement with Jan bhagidari at the core. In a country as diverse as India, that principle matters because local solutions often work better than one-size-fits-all models. India’s water future will not be secured by the government alone. It will be secured when citizens, Urban Local Bodies, Panchayats, industries, scientists and administrators act as partners
