Analysts warn that the Indian currency may slide further and touch the 93-mark if the West Asia conflict drags on
THE rupee on Wednesday fell below the sensitive 92-mark as the war in West Asia set the crude oil on fire and spooked global markets. Reserve Bank of India’s intervention appears to have averted further erosion of the Indian currency.
During intraday trade, the rupee touched an all-time low of 92.32 against the dollar, down 0.91% or 72 paise in one of the largest single-day drops in recent months, eclipsing its previous record low of 91.98 recorded in January.
The rupee opened the day’s session 50 paise down from the previous close of 91.68 and went on to lose more ground till RBI intervened, helping it close at 92.15—still a new record low.
According to analysts, the rupee could slip further and cross the 93 level as the raging war and spike in crude oil prices have pushed investors towards safe-haven assets such as the dollar and gold.
