₹151 cr saltwater barrage project underway in Udupi: Minister

UNDER the Paschima Vahini project, a ₹151-crore saltwater barrage is being built in Udupi district to prevent saltwater intrusion and provide irrigation for 192.52 hectares of farmland.
District in-charge Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, speaking after hoisting the national flag at the district-level Independence Day celebrations in Udupi on Friday, said several other major works are also progressing. These include: Maravanthe outer harbour expansion at a cost of ₹85 crore, Hejamady Kodi fisheries harbour built at a cost of ₹180.84 crore, Hangarakatta coastal berth at a cost of ₹78.28 crore and Gangolli coastal berth at a cost of ₹95.88 crore.
In addition, ₹4.50 crore is being spent on 10 sea-erosion protection walls. Tourism promotion initiatives and the development of new industrial areas covering 1,207 acres are also underway, she said.
