Destroys 10 hectares of land & wipes out 1,500 saplings planted over the past two years

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Kollam

A MASSIVE fire broke out at the Kandanchira oil palm plantation under Oil Palm India Limited on Tuesday, reducing palm trees worth lakhs of rupees to ashes. The blaze, which started around 3 pm, destroyed 10 hectares of land and completely wiped out 1,500 oil palm saplings planted over the past two years.

Two workers were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. The fire, which initially spread through the undergrowth and dry branches, quickly climbed to the tops of the oil palm trees due to strong winds, filling the area with thick black smoke and making access nearly impossible.
