IN a groundbreaking discovery that positions Telangana on the global paleontology map, fossils unearthed near Annaram village in the Pranhita-Godavari Valley decades ago have led to the identification of a new dinosaur species, Maleriraptor Kuttyi.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Hyderabad

The predator, which lived over 200 million years ago during the Norian stage of the Late Triassic, was discovered in the 1980s and is believed to offer fresh insights into dinosaur evolution and their survival strategies.

The bipedal predator, which ranged from 1.2 m to 6 m in length, and whose details are published in journal 'Royal Society Open Science', has become the first evidence that Herrerasaurus also survived in Gondwana, which includes India, and one of the few known to persist through a period of widespread extinction that reshaped prehistoric life.
