With digital transformation sweeping across every sector, it has become imperative for governments and industries to adopt emerging technologies to remain competitive, drive societal progress, generate employment, foster economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life and environmental sustainability.
Aiming to become a trillion dollar economy by 2030-31, Tamil Nadu has also begun embracing various technologies artificial intelligence, machine learning, automation and robotics, big data, augmented and virtual reality which are the key forces driving Industry 4.0 (Fourth Industrial Revolution) and transforming modern industries.
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and associated technologies such as AI, Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, robotics, quantum computing, quantum communication and encryption, data science, predictive analytics, and cyber security for critical infrastructure are bringing about profound changes across nearly all areas of human activity.
At this juncture, the Tamil Nadu government has implemented the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme to equip students with field-specific skills, with a long-term vision to integrate advanced digital technologies into the curricula, thereby strengthening both education and industry.
According to Professor P Kaliraj, (who edited the book ‘Industry 4.0 Technologies’), higher education must align with the demands of Industry 4.0 and 5.0. “It is essential to impart essential skills to help students face the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world around us,” he said.
