Crinums stars crush a Kingdom to remain unbeaten

THE Free State Crinums picked up where they left off in the opening week of the Telkom Netball League, crushing bottom side the KZN Kingdom Stars 68-34 yesterday after also taming the Jaguars on the opening weekend of Power Week 2 at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.
Martha Masoahle-Samm’s unbeaten side now tops the Division 1 standings with a full house of 16 points from eight matches.
Buoyed by their first win of the campaign against the Eastern Cape Aloes on Saturday, it was the underdog Kingdom Stars who made the brighter start. Goal shooter Nomfundo Mngomezulu got the better of Crinums defensive stalwarts Karla Pretorius and Liame de Lange in the circle during the opening exchanges.
The KwaZulu-Natal side trailed by just one point at the end of the first quarter (11-10), but last year’s losing finalists quickly extinguished any hopes of an upset with a suffocating defensive display.
