THE eThekwini Municipality says its turnaround strategy to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) is beginning to yield positive results.

- ZAINUL DAWOOD

NRW includes water lost through leaks, theft or illegal connections.

Providing an update to the Executive Committee (EXCO) yesterday, acting Executive Director for Technical Services Ednick Msweli said outstanding leaks had been reduced from 9 000 in June 2025 to 979 by October 20.

Msweli said the latest data presented by the Water Service Directorate highlighted a decrease of 2.9% in NRW for quarter one, from July to September 2025. As a result of the 2.9% decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year, NRW is currently at 52.9% for the current quarter.

Msweli explained that the 58% of NRW that the municipality previously reported is based on a 12-month average.

He stated that the monthly data fluctuates, adding that the reduction is a positive step towards achieving the target to reduce the overall NRW.
