Shields respond to successive defeats with a return to form
The Journal
|March 23, 2026
ASSISTANT manager Carl Magnay called for focus as South Shields bounced back from successive defeats with a dominant 4-1 win against promotion rivals Merthyr Town.
The Mariners did a lot of the hard work in the first half as they put the double disappointment of defeats at Hereford and King's Lynn Town firmly behind them.
Striker Paul Blackett did what he does best with two clinical finishes from close range before the midway point of the half.
That set the platform for on-loan Middlesbrough youngster Sonny Finch to grab an eye-catching third before halftime, before he set up Ollie Bainbridge to stretch the lead after the restart.
