Can dual nationals fly on expired British passports?

Q Friends of ours have been caught up in the “dual citizenship” fiasco: their lives are based abroad but they are due to make a trip back to the UK and they do not have valid British passports. Should they contact the carrier to see if they can travel on expired passports, or is there a central point of contact? Fiona S
A Many people who are British by birth or descent have been coming and going to and from the UK for years on their foreign passports - allowing their UK passports to lapse because they seemed superfluous. Yet these people must change their travel ways. Anyone planning a trip to the mother country must try to renew their British passport (£94.50) or spend £589 on a “certificate of entitlement”.
