Rare giant moth caterpillar found

A SPECTACULAR caterpillar of a rare moth species best known for appearing on the poster for a blockbuster Hollywood film has been found on Dartmoor.

The giant and colourful caterpillar measuring several inches in length was discovered in a garden on west Dartmoor, Devon.

The caterpillar is that of the death'shead hawk-moth, a large migrant moth species which famously featured on the poster for the film The Silence of the Lambs.

The adult moth is so called because of the distinctive skull-shaped marking behind its head on the back of its thorax, and the species has historically been a source of superstition and associated with death.
