PETROL AND DIESEL VEHICLES FACE HIGHER CHARGES

- By WILLIAMTELFORD

PETROL and diesel cars could be charged more to park in Plymouth under new Net Zero green proposals. Plymouth City Council is considering bringing in "emissions-based vehicle charging tariffs", which have already proved controversial in towns and cities such as Reading, Bath and Bristol.

The council said it wants to "follow the lead of other similar-sized cities by exploring the feasibility, potential role and benefits of emissions-based vehicle charging tariffs".

The proposal is included in a new Net Zero Action Plan (NZAP) which will be discussed by councillors next week. The document gives little detail other than to say the council will look at "options" for the tariffs during 2025/26, with a view to "incentivising sustainable transport choices and in supporting sustainable transport projects". In other cities, emissions-based vehicle charging tariffs have meant charging the most pollution-causing vehicles more money to park.
