City under heightened economic preparedness

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has placed the city under heightened economic and operational preparedness to safeguard resources and ensure uninterrupted delivery of public services amid expected ripple effects of the escalating conflict in the Gulf region.

The move comes amid intensifying violence in the Middle East, where missile strikes and air raids have reportedly damaged airports, hotels, and oil facilities in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman following United States and Israeli military operations against Iran.

Attacks in Dubai and Doha have disrupted airspace and transport routes, fueling concerns over possible oil supply disruptions that could push global fuel prices higher in the coming weeks.

Analysts have also raised alarms over the vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Global petroleum markets have already begun showing signs of volatility.

Speaking at a press conference, Archival disclosed that Cebu City spends approximately P300 million annually on fuel and maintenance. He has directed the Department of General Services (DGS) to secure a stable fuel supply for the next one to two months, anticipating higher demand during the dry season.

“Dinhi sa atong syudad, we are spending P300 million in fuel and maintenance. Akong girequest ang DGS to make sure nga for the next one month or two months, naa gyud tay klaro nga supply,” Archival said.
