Muslims seek national animal status for cow

A large gathering of Muslims under the banner of the Anjuman-e-Islam Committee staged a peaceful demonstration in Hangal town of Haveri district, urging the Central Government to declare the cow as India’s national animal.

- NT Correspondent

Protesters said such a move would provide stronger legal protection for cattle and help curb incidents of vigilantism carried out in the name of cow protection.

Hundreds of people assembled at M.J. Circle, one of the town’s busiest junctions, where community leaders and local residents expressed concern over what they described as a growing number of moral policing incidents and unlawful actions by certain groups claiming to safeguard cows.
