The Art of Swings: How Teej Décor Inspires Traditional Crafts
The Daily Guardian
|July 28, 2025
The arrival of the monsoon in India brings more than rain—it ushers in an array of festivals that celebrate renewal, love, and nature's abundance.
Among them, Teej stands out as one of the most vibrant, especially in Rajasthan, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Known as a festival of swings, Teej is a tribute to Goddess Parvati's union with Lord Shiva and a celebration of marital bliss. But beyond its religious roots, Teej is also an artistic spectacle—a visual feast where tradition and craftsmanship meet.
Swings as Canvases of Creativity
At the heart of Teej is the jhula (swing), which is more than just a playful seat suspended from a tree. For centuries, it has been a symbol of festivity and artistic expression. During Teej, swings are elaborately decorated with fresh flowers, colorful fabrics, beads, and traditional hangings. From mango trees in rural courtyards to ornate wooden frames in urban homes, these swings transform into works of art.
