Sexual violence has been used by perpetrators in armed conflicts around the world - the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Iraq, Sri Lanka, Chechnya, the Central African Republic, Iran, Kenya, the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Uganda, and more recently, Ukraine, Sudan, Afghanistan, Haiti and Ethiopia - and prosecuted either as war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide.
Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) is exacerbated by rape as a tactical weapon of war.
The October 7 violence is the latest example of such crimes, which targeted 52 nationalities and claimed lives of 475 people, which also included women and children.
Perhaps even more horrific than the acts of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) itself are their dissemination and the manner the families learnt about their near dear ones: through the social media platforms and digital accounts of the victims themselves. The primary objective of this dissemination was to instil widespread terror within the society at large.
SILENCED NO MORE
After two years of extensive research, the Civil Commission on October 7th Crimes By Hamas against Women And Children published its report Silenced No More Sexual Terror Unveiled: The Untold Atrocities of October 7 and Against Hostages in Captivity. The report includes more than 430 testimonies, over 1800 hours of visual analysis and thirteen documented patterns of violence, making it the most comprehensive report to date documenting the October 7 atrocities.
