BLAZE: AMID 151 DEATHS, JASON THE POODLE BECOMES SYMBOL OF HOPE
-
FLAMES OF FEAR. Thick smoke rises as a major fire engulfs several apartment blocks at the Wang Fuk Court residential estate in Hong Kong's Tai Po district last month.
(AFP)
When Jacky Lee first heard about the fire tearing through her housing estate in Hong Kong, she rushed back in desperation to save Jason, her 15-year-old grey poodle. She feared she would never see him again.
By the time she arrived, the Wang Fuk Court complex was engulfed in flames. The blaze would become the city's deadliest in decades, killing at least 151 people and reducing seven high-rises to charred shells.
Lee, a 43-year-old airline engineer, joined crowds at a nearby school-turned-shelter, waiting anxiously for news.
