Cape Town softens up over tariffs

The Citizen

|

May 02, 2025

The City of Cape Town says it is considering extending the rebates it offers to property owners and pensioners to cushion them against the proposed Municipal Bill increases for 2025-26.

- Liesl Peyper

Proposed tariff reforms, which introduce fixed charges for water and sanitation alongside a new city-wide cleaning tariff—based on property value—has led to an outcry from property owners across the metro.

Many residents with properties valued above R2 million have raised concerns about their continued ability to keep owning their properties should the city implement its proposed rate hikes.

Several of them purchased their properties years ago when values were much lower.
