The Chronicle

IN October 1909, the Battle of Newcastle took place when Chancellor David Lloyd George visited the city to deliver a speech at the Palace Theatre in Haymarket.

Suffragettes protest over votes and jail force feeding

But his visit was marred in controversy as the suffragette campaign took the opportunity to lobby him for votes and to protest over the force feeding of women on hunger strike in prison. Stones were thrown at the Chancellor's car, with the message: “To Lloyd-George, Rebellion Against Tyranny is Obedience to God. Deeds, not Words”.

In another incident, a woman took an axe to a barrier in Percy Street, while suffragettes threw stones and broke windows at the Liberal Club, the Palace Theatre and the General Post Office.
