Litter pickers face 'worst clear out'

Members of the Ponteland Anti-Litter Squad at the A696 layby near Woolsington. Right, a fly-tipped bike

Ponteland Anti-Litter Squad (PALS) collected more than 40 sacks of rubbish across 30 hours cleaning up the layby near the Callerton turnoff on the A696 westbound; which is often used by waiting motorists picking people up from the airport.

Though the layby has four "high capacity" litter bins, the group described the layby as being in a "horrendous state", and say they also removed a dashcam, mobile phone and credit card. A bed, motor cycle batteries, several car tyres, a space hopper, gym weights, and a mountain bike had also been fly-tipped at the site.
