BURNING LIVES: REVISITED
The Business Guardian
|April 29, 2025
From the ashes of Partition to the blood in Pahalgam, the subcontinent's sorrow still whispers through broken borders and unhealed hearts.
In Ice-Candy-Man, Bapsi Sidhwa narrates the events of Partition through the eyes of Lenny, a young Parsi girl in Lahore. Her innocent perspective provides a stark contrast to the horrors unfolding around her. The abduction of her beloved Ayah by a mob, instigated by the Ice-Candy-Man, marks a turning point in Lenny's understanding of the world:
“I had never seen Ayah like this before. Her hair was dishevelled, her sari torn, and her eyes filled with terror.”
Sidhwa’s narrative captures the loss of innocence and the complexities of identity during times of upheaval, emphasising the personal toll of political decisions.
CINEMATIC REFLECTIONS ON PARTITION
Garm Hava (1973)
Directed by M.S. Sathyu and based on a story by Ismat Chughtai, Garm Hava portrays the plight of a Muslim family in post-Partition India. The film follows Salim Mirza, a shoe manufacturer in Agra, as he grapples with the decision to stay in India or migrate to Pakistan amidst rising communal tensions. The narrative captures the slow disintegration of his family and the emotional turmoil faced by those who chose to remain. Garm Hava is lauded for its realistic depiction of the socio-political climate of the time and remains a seminal work in Indian cinema.
