SOUTH Africa is undeniably a beautiful country, but there is a world of adventure waiting just beyond our borders.

With a passport in hand, South Africans can explore numerous visa-free destinations across the African continent, each offering unique experiences and breathtaking landscapes.

As someone who has embarked on my own travel adventures, I can attest to the wonders that await those willing to venture out.

My journey began almost a decade ago when I first got my passport, initially with dreams of studying in Europe.

While those plans fell through, the passport remained a symbol of potential adventure, albeit one that collected dust for many years.

It wasn’t until a job opportunity arose, sending me to cover events outside South Africa, that I finally dusted off my “green mamba” and set off on my first international trip to Zanzibar.

Zanzibar was nothing short of a dream come true.

I explored the historic streets of Stone Town, where I learned about the Indian Ocean Slave Trade and the island’s rich history as The Spice Island.

Interacting with local women, I had my hands adorned with intricate henna designs and purchased beautiful ankara fabric, which is still waiting to be transformed into a dress.

The warm Indian Ocean welcomed me as I snorkelled in its turquoise waters and relaxed on the beach, learning about the tides and the vibrant culture of the island.

Zanzibar ignited my passion for travel, leading me to explore more of the continent, including Zambia and Zimbabwe.
