Fear as military relaxes zero tolerance on drugs

DEFENCE chiefs have relaxed their zero-tolerance approach to drug taking by servicemen and women in a bid to tackle staffing shortages.

Members of the Armed Forces are routinely tested for illegal substances and in the past a positive result had almost always led to getting their marching orders. But latest statistics from the Ministry of Defence show this hardline approach has been ditched, with record numbers allowed to stay in the military despite failing tests. Some experts say the loosening of the policy could store up problems if those given a second chance are later caught up in an accident or controversy.
