Fans and family bid farewell to a Liverpool legend

Virgil van Dijk with Diogo Jota's two sons and other mascots, legend's wife and star in Liverpool days

The Portugal star, who played for Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, was 28 when he was killed in a car crash in Spain in July, alongside his brother Andre Silva, 25.

Jota spent three successful seasons with the West Midlands club before he moved to Liverpool in 2020 for £41million.

Both sets of fans paid warm tribute to him on an emotional day at Anfield yesterday. His sons, Dinis and Duarte, led the Liverpool team out of the tunnel, walking ahead of Reds' skipper Virgil van Dijk.

The announcement that the boys would be mascots was greeted with an ovation from the stands. They were applauded by fans before leaving the field as Liverpool anthem You'll Never Walk Alone was sung.
