Calls to make 'alcolocks' the law for drink drivers

CAMPAIGNERS want drink-drivers' cars fitted with “alcolocks” to deter them from getting behind the wheel again while over the limit.
It comes amid a bid to amend the Crime and Policing Bill so courts can make offenders use the kit.
Alcolocks are breathalysers linked to a vehicle’s ignition but courts lack the power to enforce their use. The “lock out drink driving” campaign is backed by the RAC.
Some 290 people were killed in 2023 in crashes involving a driver over the limit. The campaign claims more than 27,830 people have been “convicted of drink-driving offences multiple times since 2013”.
Activists want a mandatory alcolock programme for “high-risk offenders” and repeat drink-drivers.
