'Buy British plums' urges fruit grower as bumper crop lands

A FRUIT grower says it is a plum time to buy British after the warm spring created the perfect conditions for a bumper crop.

Plums were manifold in this country in the 1960s and 70s but over the decades have been grown less with shops importing them instead.

But James Miller, commercial director of family-owned firm WB Chambers, is hoping milder springs and sunny summers will see more plums grown on British farms, which can be appreciated as one of the positive aspects of climate change.

He said: "We had cool nights but warmish days through the spring and that has really given the plants per fect conditions. If we could have those conditions for the next 20 years we would be very happy."
