THE Kinks have claimed they invented heavy metal music, despite The Beatles, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin more commonly being credited with this accolade.
The north London Sixties sensations changed the world of popular music thanks to the writing of its lead vocalist Ray Davies, 81, according to his brother and bandmate Dave.
Music fans and historians have previously credited Black Sabbath - who performed a farewell gig with frontman Ozzy Osbourne at Villa Park a fortnight ago - with pioneering the sound in 1970.
